Untitled

today
it hurt much more
yesterday was okay!
it’s finally sinking within
it’s ouch!

all this
happened so fast
I really don’t understand
why’d it have to happen to me?
I pray

begin
chemo’ today
platelets for breakfast while
doctors prepare to place shunts in
my chest

fresh fruit?
no! not allowed!
and no fresh vegetables ...
and definitely no fresh flowers
dear child
lest they carry germs through double-
duty shunts into your
immune system
wiped out_

harpist
gently playing Brahms Lullaby
welcoming new life to
a world in which
I cry

wish I’d
broken my heart
girls survive broken hearts
all the time it’s raining tears in
my head

this is
what my heart says
in toil, prayer and travail
too many tears, not enough hugs
it hurts
