To Miss Emily Dickinson

I would wonder
why you left them
wrapped and ribboned
for tomorrow
till I realized
tomorrows
wrapped and ribboned
by today.
But this you knew
with more
than any urging
to display.
That blooms
are secondary
to the seed
a flower only flowers
for its stay
while seeds
are sown into
eternity.

After Emily died, her sister Lavinia found over one thousand seven hundred poems sewn into little packets and locked away.
